Delta Variant: Latest Updates

CDC on July 27, 2021, released updated guidancon the need for urgently increasing COVID-19 vaccination coverage and emphasized to use masks for everyone despite vaccination.

New data is sugeesting that not only virus is spreading at rapid rate but also causing more severe infections in affected individuals as compared to previous waves.

  1. The Delta variant causes more infections and spreads faster than early forms of SARS-CoV-2
  2. According to data by CDC and webmed, It is now the dominant strain in the U.S.
  3. According to Yale Medicine,  average person who gets infected with Delta spreads it to three or four other people, as compared with one or two other people through the original coronavirus strain.

INFECTION AND SPREADING

  • The Delta variant is highly contagious, nearly twice as contagious as previous variants.
  • Delta variant might cause more severe illness than previous strains in unvaccinated persons. 
  • Vaccinated individuals can be infected with the Delta variant, including fully vaccinated people with symptomatic breakthrough infections, can transmit it to others. 
  • Vaccinated people appear to be infectious for a shorter period: 
  • Non vaccinated people are at greatest risk and potential source of infecting to others.

VACCINES AND MASKS 

  • The COVID-19 vaccines authorized are highly effective at preventing severe disease and death, including against the Delta variant. 
  • Wearing masks, are needed to reduce the transmission of this variant.
